Madiba Photo Sold on Auction for R2m

The South African charity organisation 21 Icons believes that the ‘Rainbow Nation’ will be inspired to make profoundly positive change through hearing the stories of our remarkable home-grown leaders. In this project, signed portraits of icons like Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk, Hugh Masekela, Johnny Clegg and of course Tata Madiba were captured by the 21 Icons team.

The first portrait to go up for auction was a moving photograph of Madiba’s image reflected in a handheld mirror. The photograph fetched R2 million – the highest ever price paid for a photograph in South Africa, and a substantial donation to the Mandela Children’s Hospital Fund. The hospital is currently being built and expected to open its doors in the second half of 2014. The World Wildlife Fund will also receive part of the proceeds of this auction. Continue reading
